32 men arrested in Winnipeg Police sex trafficking sweep

A joint police operation targeting sexual exploitation and human trafficking in Winnipeg has led to 32 arrests and the seizure of 15 vehicles, according to Winnipeg police.

The four-day effort, carried out Nov. 12 to 15, brought together the Winnipeg Police Service's Counter Exploitation Unit, the RCMP Human Trafficking Unit, and analysts with Manitoba Justice's Criminal Intelligence Centre. Officers focused on both online activity and areas of the city known for street-level exploitation.

Police said the 32 men arrested, ages 18 to 75, were taken into custody for obtaining sexual services for consideration or communicating for that purpose. The arrests happened at several locations across Winnipeg. All of the accused were released on undertakings and are expected to appear in court later.

As part of the operation, officers also made contact with 25 people working in the sex trade. Police said the goal was to check on their safety and offer access to supports and resources.

Investigators seized 15 vehicles under a provision of the Highway Traffic Act that allows police to impound vehicles linked to prostitution-related offences.

In a brief statement, police said the operation reflects ongoing efforts to curb exploitation and identify people who may be at risk. RCMP officers involved in the investigation pointed to the importance of coordinated work between agencies when dealing with human trafficking files.
