Ont. to join porn appeal

TORONTO — Ontario will join B.C. in a Supreme Court challenge against a decision that struck down Canada's ban on possessing child pornography.

Jim Flaherty, Ontario's attorney-general, yesterday said the province will seek intervenor status. He said Ontario is the most aggressive province in Canada trying to wipe out child pornography.

B.C. has asked the court to hear an appeal of a lower-court decision striking down part of the 1993 federal law on child porn. Vancouver retiree John Sharpe argued that charges of possessing photos of nude boys violated his right to freedom of expression.
