Slaying case mistrial declared

REGINA -- The murder trial of two young white men accused in the beating death of an aboriginal woman has been delayed for up to two months after a judge declared a mistrial Tuesday.

Justice Eugene Maurice of Court of Queen's Bench said the move was necessary because some members of the public and journalists were initially barred from Monday's jury selection process. While Maurice said he didn't think there was any miscarriage of justice, he said he could not permit even the perception of unfairness to exist.

Steven Kummerfield, 19, and Alex Ternowetsky, 20, were arrested in May 1995 and charged with first-degree murder in the dealth of Pamela George, a prostitute, on April 17.
